Sexual predators targeting children through online games

MONROE, La. (KNOE) – Louisiana State Police say sexual predators are targeting children through online games and are warning parents to get involved. LSP says many children play to connect with their friends, but officials say that’s how predators find their victims.

“The game systems are huge. These kids are logging on to play with people around the world, and they may be giving away sensitive information,” said Sgt. Scott Moreau of the Louisiana State Public Affairs Police.

According to Camille Phillips, a prevention educator with the Children’s Advocacy Center of Northeast Louisiana, the most popular social media sites have the most scrutiny from predators.

“Like Snapchat or Instagram, it’s sort of popular sites and TikTok. I know for sure that Instagram and Snapchat have places where you can mark places and times and things like that for kids and minors, I would suggest not doing that,” she said.

sergeant. Moreau warns parents to learn about the social media sites their child uses. Then get involved in what they do and who they talk to.

“They must have a username and password. It’s not just cell phones, it’s computers, digital cameras, WebCams that connect to the internet,” said Sgt. Moreau.

He says protecting your child starts with knowing the online safety rules.
