May 2022 PS Plus free games continue the curse of the month

Before May, Sony had a touch year with PSMore. January and March received a fairly good selection of games, while February and April lagged. April was so poorly received that many hoped the May 2022 PS Plus Free Games would redeem it. However, that doesn’t seem to be the case, not in full.

PS Plus tends to follow certain patterns even for a while. It doesn’t make it easy to predict which games will be on PS Plus, or to judge when something is a new model. One thing that has remained constant, however, is the Rule of March and the Curse of May. In short, March tends to be one of the best months of the year every year and May tends to be one of the worst.

PS Plus Free Games: The March Rule Explained

It is easy to look back over the past months to see how this pattern has established itself. In 2018, for example, there were 6 games distributed for March, most of them being smaller games. The reason this month follows the March rule is because two of the games were transmitted by blood and Ratchet and Clankwhich is a tough month to follow even though it was the only two games.

In 2019, March 2019 added The witness and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Remastered. The former got great reviews, though it doesn’t have the greatest appeal as a puzzle game, and Modern Warfare Remastered joined at the right time. There was a lot of hype and speculation that Call of Duty 2019the game would be a new one modern warfare, and PS Plus helped secure that deal. After all, first-person shooters are one of the most popular genres, and modern warfare is one of the most popular games among them.

In 2020, March saw the addition of the Shadow of the Colossus Remake and Sonic forces, which is pretty much said. Both games were hugely successful and immediately appealed to the service. March 2021 then saw a PS5 puzzle game in Model, Final Fantasy 7 Remake, Remnant: From the Ashesand VR remote. There was a nice broadcast and a new PS5 game, although Model was not the highest rated. Pair that with a Soulslike shooter and a big JRPG remake, and March 2021 has been a terrific month.

That’s the thing with the March rule. Not only do some of the best games of the year appear on the service usually in March, but it usually helps set the tone for the year. March 2021 was awesome, and PS Plus had a pretty brilliant 2021. PS Plus Free Games March 2022 had no less of an impact than previous years, with Ark: Survival Evolved, Ghost of Tsushima Legends, Ghostrunner, and Sonic Racing Team hit the serve.

PS Plus Free Games: The Curse of May Explained

If May shows the potential highs for the year, May tends to show the worst. Thing is, it’s not because they’re bad games, it’s because they don’t tend to appeal to something like PS Plus. The above Witness is a great game, but many still wouldn’t touch a puzzle game. May tends to have those gaffes where the call just gets sucked out of the plays.

May 2018, just like March 2018, had a big broadcast of games, but the three headliners were Beyond: Two Souls, Rayman Legends, and Risen 3. The former is described as an interactive drama and action-adventure game, which is very heavy in QTE. It certainly has its audience, but not the broad appeal that PS Plus needs. Risen 3 fall into the same boat. It’s an RPG, which tends to be one of the most popular genres, but it’s also a Eurojank game, which means it tends to be “crazier” than AAA RPGs. It’s a major dealbreaker for many. Rayman is perhaps the best of the bunch, but still, many have grown up without Rayman and therefore the appeal to a younger audience is perhaps lost.

This is repeated in May 2019, with Overcooked and What Remains of Edith Finch. Both are good games, but neither really has the most appealing style of gameplay options. They both have their following, but not the broad appeal the service needs. May 2020, however, may have been the worst month of the May Curse.

Yes Modern Warfare Remastered rode the franchise’s speculative peak in March 2019, the May 2020 games followed the perfect storm of misinformation. This one isn’t even so much on Sony. A wild rumor managed to gain traction for some reason, with many believing PS Plus would be released dying light and Dark Souls Remastered in May 2020. For Sony to release next Farming Simulator 19 and Cities: Skylines was a punch in the stomach. Both are good simulators, but farming and city simulators are about as niche as they come. It even led to a huge fan petition asking Sony to change the games.

Finally, May 2021 wasn’t the worst the curse has seen. Wreckage Party, Battlefield 5, and Failed deep hit the service, and the overall appeal of these games here may be a cut above previous years. But again, 2021 was a special year for PS Plus, and even those games didn’t hold much candles compared to the rest of the year.

Why PS Plus May 2022 Free Games Fall Into This Curse

Many hoped May 2022 would redeem April, but as with last May, the call needed for many PS Plus subscribers isn’t there. FIFA 22, Tribes of Midgard, and Curse of the Dead Gods are the free PS Plus games of May 2022, and none of them are bad games. Arguably it’s a much better month than May 2020, but it’s worse than May 2021. sports sell very well, no doubt, but they don’t tend to perform well on the service.

This is because the majority of sports game fans will have their favorite game like mad or Fifa, as soon as they can. Thus, the ship of FIFA 22 has sailed widely. Curse of the Dead Godsmeanwhile, is another great game – a dungeon-crawling roguelike perhaps comparable to underworld– and yet the dungeon-crawling aspect can be hit and miss with fans. Tribes of Midgard is a good mix of roguelike, action, and survival, but the mix and top-down aspect also limits the appeal.

Again, that’s not to say they’re bad games – far from it, in fact – but their general appeal is limited on a service where general appeal and variety tend to help month after month. It’s not the worst May ever, but it’s definitely part of May’s curse. However, if those find themselves towards the bottom of the year, perhaps the rest of PS Plus’s free games for 2022 will knock their months out of the park.
