July 2022 PS Plus free games take up a lot of space

On July 5, the PSMore free games (now known as the Essential tier) will redeem titles. 4th of July is the last chance for anyone looking to pick up God of War, from Naruto to Boruto: Shinobi Striker, and or Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl. However, it should be noted that God of the war will still be available to PS Plus Extra and Premium subscribers.

These three games will be replaced by three others: Crash Bandicoot 4, the man from Medan, and onercadegeddon. Generally speaking, these games have better collective reviews than June games (like God of the war is the only one to be reviewed), so it will be interesting to see how the month is received. It now also matters whether or not someone counts in the new PS Plus Extra additions. But for those working with limited space on their consoles, they should be aware that this month’s PS Plus games will take up a lot of space.

Arcadegeddon adds a few gigabytes to the download size of games, although this is by far the smallest. Looking at the PS4 size only, as the PS5 versions have smaller sizes, Arcadegeddon comes somewhere between 6.5 and 13 gigabytes. Medan Man and Crash Bandicoot 4, however, are huge. The former comes in at 50.5 gigabytes on its own, while the latter comes in at 45.3. That’s almost 100 gigabytes for just two games, and the 100 GB threshold is exceeded if someone downloads all three games.

Those who download all three games to a PS5 console are in relatively better shape, because Arcageddon weighs 7.1 GB, Crash Bandicoot to 20.05 GB, and Medan Man (because there is only a PS4 version available) remains at 50.5 GB. That’s a total of 77.65 GB compared to the 100 for PS4 users.

Storage space, no doubt, is becoming an increasingly important issue as games get bigger, even as consoles find better ways to use that storage space. External SSDs for PS5 and Xbox Series X remain expensive, however, which means some gamers have to constantly download, delete, download games and/or re-download others. For those with access to excellent internet, this isn’t a big deal, but many rural areas struggle more in this department.

This is more true given the release of PS Plus Extra and Premium, as well as Game Pass on Xbox consoles. These libraries are huge and no one has downloaded all the games, but it’s understandable that some services are looking into better cloud technology. Either way, PS4 users looking to get all three games should make sure they have space.

PSMore subscribers receive a handful of free games each month.
